UNHCR and IOM welcome Colombia's decision to regularise Venezuelan migrants

UNHCR and IOM welcome Colombia's decision to regularize Venezuelan refugees and migrants and the international praise for the Temporary Protection Statute continues, from world leaders such as United States President Joe Biden, Secretary General of United Nations, António Guterres or Pope Francis of the Catholic Church, to NGO's such as Plan International. In the words of Plan International's Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, Debora Cobar, the measure makes Colombia "a benchmark for governments in the region and a breakthrough for human rights, as well as an embodiment of solidarity".

President Ivan Duque and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Claudia Blum, ratified the commitment of Colombia to Venezuelan migrants on a virtual event organised by the Permanent Mission of Colombia to the United Nations held on 4th March. The session was aimed at making visible the objectives and scope of the adoption of the TSP.

Colombia increases its 2030 climate change targets to improve air quality

Colombia’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) increases its 2030 climate change ambition and integrates new targets that simultaneously improve air quality and health. The NDC aims to reduce greenhouse gases by 51% and black carbon emissions by 40% in 2030 compared to 2014 levels. The black carbon target ensures Colombia’s NDC will improve air quality in Colombian cities, with important benefits for health alongside climate mitigation. Read more.

As an additional measure to pursue the goal of cutting its carbon dioxide emissions, President Duque confirmed on Monday 1st March during CERAWeek, the government is encouraging energy companies to transition from fossil fuels to non-conventional renewable energies.

President Duque presents 10 realities of the advances in Peace with Legality

On 24th February, President Duque presented 10 realities of the Peace with Legality Policy. He emphasised "the construction of peace does not belong to any ideology or party, peace is the nation's mission". President Duque also mentioned the funding to support and develop the policy in 2021 will be more than 10 trillion pesos, an increase of 9.2%. You can read the full presentation here.

The Embassy of Colombia in Ireland is pleased to see the developing of links between Irish and Colombian literature. In 2020, the Embassy sponsored an opportunity within the Words Ireland National Mentoring Programme. Medellín novelist mentored Irish writer Lucy Moore, who shares her experience and the outcomes of the programme with us.
